About

I am a lone programmer who specializes in web development with beginnings in software development.

Shameless self promotion: If you are interested in a website, hosting, or some web related programming, feel free to give me a shout and we will see what I can do for you.

This blog is really just here to outline some of the things that I am working on, or provide me a place to document some of my random things. I wouldn’t call it a blog per say, but a place I myself can come back to and relearn things I have documented.

I have chosen to run this on Wordpress. My previous site which has been down for a couple years due to spam, was a custom site and pretty much high maintenance, although it allowed me to post pages, links, etc, it required a lot of extra programming here and there and was never really complete so I eventually binned it. A personal site should not feel daunting or a never ending time trap, Wordpress is freeing me from that.

Other than the Internet, I tend to be obsessive compulsive on things that peak my interest in just the right way. A lot of the time this interferes with my work. Oops! But come on, really, who doesn’t spend 3 weeks straight every hour of the day reading about nuclear fusion and how you can build your own nuclear reactor in your kitchen? Well I did, and it was fascinating, but thats just one topic I have spent a better part of a month sinking my brain into every aspect of.

My interests include:

  • Motorcycles – All forms of motorcycling and would love to try every motorcycle discipline at least once.
  • Software Programming – C, C++, Visual Basic, and dabbled in Assembler writing complete DOS & Win32 programs from scratch. I do not write custom software for people anymore, sorry, I only work on personal projects in this area.
  • Web Development – My current method of paying the bills
  • Linux – Because free and a little elbow grease is always better than being forced to bend over
  • Gaming – Great way to blow off steam and relax a bit
  • Movies – I love movies and their commentaries. I am fascinated by movie making, script writing, and acting, basically the “art”. I have compiled a list of movies I own at imbd.com, checkout my link on the right. I have just started “collecting” movies and have an enormous list of movies on my get list.
  • I might as well add my love for documentaries. Pretty much any topic, the Discovery channel, TLC, and the Home & Garden channel, and last but definitely not least, the SPEED channel.
  • Difficult things – sometimes its good to exercise the brain and really think about something

Sites I frequent:

  • Facebook.com – Friend me up if you like
  • Revision3.com – One of my sources for fun and interesting podcasts
  • Digg.com – Keeps me up to date on bullshit, tech, funnies, and the odd inspirational/useful article
  • Twitter.com – I try, but still haven’t quite got my phone working with it
  • Google.com – Where I start my day (gmail, calendar, reader, maps)
  • Last.fm – Helps me find more music and meet others with similar interests
  • Imdb.com – Where I find and research movies and tv shows

Software I use (as if you’re interested):

  • Bluefish – Programming editor
  • Firefox – Should be obvious by now
  • MySQL/Apache – Because I spend a lot of time in these
  • gedit – My basic text editor
  • Gnome – My most preferred window manager
  • wifi-radar – Because I deal with wireless networking way too much
  • terminal – I spend a load of time here too
  • Photoshop – My only windows-based application runs in Linux
  • Gimp – My image editor
  • Pidgin – Chat client (msn, aim, jabber, icq, etc etc)
  • Xmms – My music player
  • Totem/Mplayer – My video/music apps of choice

Hardware I use:

  • Laptop – My main work PC, Gateway M675 17″ display
  • Phone – HTC P4000 (HTC Titan), shitty name yes, but works awesome
  • Desktop – really just sits there and serves my data
  • Wifi – I have a love/hate relationship with it
  • Xbox360 – not just for games, I stream all my movies/podcasts via uPnP from my file server
  • My Insignia 42″ LCD HDTV, for movies, gaming, and as a monitor for my desktop/file server
